Chris was born and raised in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. After high school, the family relocated to the Gold Coast. It wasn't long before Chris found his way back to Sydney.
Over the years Chris has worked in a range of roles within the hospitality industry. This led him to London in 2004. Chris spent three years traveling London and Europe. Chris then moved to Banff in Canada for 12 months before settling in Sydney.
Chris has worked in the IT industry since 2009. His first role was in a customer service team at an IT distribution company. He then worked his way into sales and is currently the NSW State Manager at Qirx.
In 2014 Chris experienced his first wave of anxiety. Chris had no idea what was happening and thought that his world was falling apart. Over the years Chris has learned how to live with anxiety by seeking professional advice and making several changes to his life. One major change was to give up alcohol altogether in an effort to minimise anxiety.
Chris has been married for seven years and shares two beautiful children, Ava and Parker, with his wife Amanda.
Life has changed dramatically since fatherhood and Chris hopes his experiences may benefit men going through similar events in their lives.
Christopher is from the southern areas of Sydney, growing up around Botany Bay and spending much of his time in the Sutherland Shire. While a New South Welshman at heart he is adamant that Brisbane/Gold Coast is now where home is.
Having lived in much of Australia, including Port Macquarie, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Darwin, Kakadu, Alice Springs, Melbourne as well as the small island country of Vanuatu, he's been privileged to have many great experiences (and some not-so-great).
Christopher grew up living with his three sisters and their single mother, along with his grandparents. To this day, he still credits his grandparents for the attitude and strength that drove him to be successful today. In his mid-teens, he found out his dad wasn't his biological father, and attempts to locate him failed.
His most challenging period came in a series of events that set him on the path to supporting other men. In 2011, his dear grandmother passed away. The grief he felt turned to anger when he learned his mother was stealing from her. In 2013, he found out he was going to be a father, however, pre-labour complications occurred resulting in tragedy and his son Kaden passed away two months later from the damage caused by H.I.E. Within 12 months his marriage deteriorated as they struggled to deal with the aftermath and he was divorced in 2015. In 2016 his 'Dad', a man he'd known since six months old, passed away from years of health struggles. Just five months later his grandfather followed at age 94.
During the later years of those events, Christopher tried to escape and kept moving around, ending up in Kakadu. This didn't work as he hoped and he experienced a number of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Determined not to succumb, he kept working and looking for opportunities to support other men and started volunteering with Sands & Pillars of Strength. This has been helpful for Christopher as he knows it has been for the many men and fathers he has spoken to.
His time in the Northern Territory led him to his now partner Victoria and today they have two boys, Lincoln & Oliver who keep him busy and proud.
Chris talks about his challenges growing up as a kids and through his journey we will discover how anxiety and depression can pop its head up at any stage. Chris's interview hopes to empower other men to seek help and support while accepting there could be a problem.
Chris 'Topher' talks about his mental health challenges at various time in life. We find out about his biological father, divorce, up bringing and most significantly the loss of his baby son Kaden.
